WHat is acne?

Types of Acne and How To Prevent It

Let’s start off with a definition of what acne is. Professional acne brand Face Reality defines acne as: an inherited disorder of the pores where dead skin cells shed much faster than normal. Normal pores shed approximately 1 layer of dead skin cells per day inside the pore, while acne-prone pores shed up to 5 layers, causing buildup. This buildup forms a microcomedone, which is where all acne lesions begin. That microcomedone turns into blackheads or whiteheads under the skin; and if bacteria is present, it feeds on the dead skin cells and oil, creating inflamed pimples or pustules, and possibly cysts. The clearing process can take anywhere from 90 days to a few months.

JUNE 5, 2025

Most of us have struggled with the frustrating reality of acne- and if you haven’t, lucky you! For the most part, we’ve had our fair share of breakouts. Whether it be from hormonal times of the month or awkward teenage phases, acne is no stranger. While some may be aware of why they’re breaking out, the understanding of what acne is may not be common knowledge. I’m here to chat all about what acne really is, while identifying the different types, while still letting you in on what may be causing it. The month of June is also Acne Awareness Month and the perfect opportunity to spread awareness! So, let’s get into it.

Whew that was a lot to digest! If that wasn’t enough, there are also various types of acne within that definition. Acne can be broken down into three different kinds: inflamed, non-inflamed, and combination. Inflamed acne is typically skin containing redness with pimples, pustules, cysts, and hot to the touch. Non-inflamed is the opposite of this with its activity happening under the surface. It is typically categorized as skin that appears dull and sluggish, while having lots of open comedones (blackheads) and closed comedones. Lastly, combination is a mix of inflamed and non-inflamed lesions. Check out the picture below for a visual representation of the different types.

If you’re following a skin regimen and are still struggling with breakouts, it could be due to a new product that is causing your skin to purge. What is purging? When your skin purges, it is usually in the context of a new regimen or treatment. This can accelerate the rate of cell turnover in the skin, which brings underlying acne to the surface. It doesn’t necessarily mean the product isn’t working, but instead, it is doing its job to clear impurities and work under the surface. This is normal within the first few weeks of a new treatment! If you feel like your skin still isn’t bouncing back after a while, it may be time to switch it up.

Now that we have a better understanding of what acne is, let’s get into the many ways acne can form. Although acne in its simplest form is bacteria on the skin, there are many lifestyle factors that contribute to the production. Starting off strong with the food and supplements we consume, there are many parts of our diet that may not be serving our skin. These are usually the first things to look at when identifying why your skin may be breaking out. Some common foods that lead to acne include:
  • Dairy products
  • Shellfish
  • Soy products
  • Seaweed products/supplements
  • Vitamins with iodides

Iodides in specific irritate the pores and can lead to acne flare ups. These foods don’t necessarily need to be cut out, but if you feel like you are struggling with breakouts, these may be products to consume in moderation. If you’re feeling discouraged- don’t worry, there’s still good news! Although there may be acne-prone foods, there are good substitutions you can make, and other foods you can take that are supportive to the skin. Some supportive foods include:
  • Apple cider vinegar
  • Green tea (especially matcha)
  • Any selenium rich foods (think brazilian nuts, pinto beans, oats, and chicken)
  • Ginger
  • Leafy greens

Alongside dietary factors, there are lifestyle aggravators to the skin as well. The most obvious and well known factor to disrupt the skin is stress- which I'm sure most of us have had enough of! I’m sure you’re skin of hearing to reduce stress, as it definitely seems easier said than done. Luckily for you, I’m always here to help you unwind whenever that stress gets too high. If you’ve already gotten your treatment in, and still feel that anxiety, make sure you are prioritizing your sleep, and above all- yourself. Besides stress check out the graphic below for some other ways flare-ups can occur:
