Even if you’re staying consistent with your skincare routine, pregnancy can throw your skin for a loop. Hormonal shifts- especially changes in estrogen, progesterone, and other key hormones- can lead to unexpected breakouts and sensitivity. While you can’t control these hormonal fluctuations, you can take charge of certain lifestyle factors, like your nutrition. Some foods are naturally anti-inflammatory and may help calm acne, while others can trigger flare-ups and increase oil production. A few common anti-inflammatory foods include: apple cider vinegar, ginger, and leafy greens. On the other hand, some common dietary acne aggressors are: whey protein, shellfish, and soy products. Steering away from foods that may aggravate the skin, and opting for foods rich in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory effects will save your skin as your body undergoes many changes. Curious to learn more? Check out our acne blog here for a deeper insight. As always, please consult your doctor before making any dietary changes.

Now that we’ve talked about what’s going into your body, let’s shift to what you’re putting on it. Your skin is your largest organ, and during pregnancy, it deserves extra care and attention. Some skincare ingredients that are normally safe may not be the best choice right now. In fact, there are a few you’ll definitely want to avoid while pregnant or nursing-like salicylic acid (a beta hydroxy acid), vitamin A (including retinoids), and trichloroacetic acid (TCA), commonly used in chemical peels. These can be too harsh or potentially harmful during this sensitive time. Check in with the products you use in your daily routine to make sure everything is safe for you! For more information, check out the graphic below for a breakdown of which specific products from the brands we carry at In the Nude Skincare may be safe or unsafe during this time.
While it might feel limiting, there are still plenty of pregnancy-safe ingredients that can keep your skin glowing without the risk. One of our favorite lines to transition to during pregnancy is Epicutis, as it simplifies your routine, is 100% non-toxic, but also great for supplementing the ingredients you may be removing from your routine. Check out and shop our Epicutis line here!
